Viticulture

Vineyard: Located around the town of El Masroig.
Soil Type: Mostly chalky and calcareous.
Vine Age: 15-50 years old.
Irrigation: No irrigation
Harvest Date: From 1st week of September (Merlot) until the 3rd of October (Cab.Sauvignon)
Yield: 4.5 t/ha

Vinification:

Castell de les Pinyeres is a blend of 30% Carinyena, 45% Garnatxa,5% Ull de Llebre ,10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot. Ull de Llebre is the name given to Tempranillo in Catalan.
This wine was made using traditional fermentation with indigenous yeast. Mainly the wine is Grenache and Carignan, the typical grapes of the region, but using some other grapes in small quantities to give complexity. The wine was aged for 13 months in French and American oak barrels first, and then aged in stainless steel for 6 months. Bottled in August 2007.

Tasting Notes:

Color: Deep ruby red color.
Nose: In the nose it is upfront, showing red fruit, minerals, chocolate and some spicy wooden notes.
Palate: In the mouth it is lively, silky, with strong fruity flavors and well balanced. Red ripe fruits with a refreshing aftertaste. It’s really elegant and well made.
Other: A beautifully balanced wine, with fine and soft tannins, it is best enjoyed with rich meaty dishes, the soft tannins make it very elegant.
